At the moment Martin Smolinski is the best German rider. One of his biggest successes is winning the inaugural Grand Prix round in New Zealand, which was a surprise for the whole speedway world. Unfortunately he wasn’t so successful in European Championship and was sixteenth at the end.
Surely such score is a big disappointment for German fans who came numerously for the inaugural SEC tournament in Gustrow. Smoliski had big problems with his bikes then and he managed to win only one heat. As it appeared later it was German’s only individual win in this year’s series. “Smoli” scored only 13 points however it should be reminded that he didn’t start in Holsted because of the long track tournament which took place the same day.
German scored most points in Gustrow and Częstochowa (5). In Togliatti he was last with only three points scored. There are no doubts that Smolinski will want to qualify to the next year series and improve his scores. Last, sixteenth place among the permanent participants of Speedway European Championships series is not something which he can be proud of so it has to be much better next year. Fans will definitely remember his row – boat which he made in Togliatti and broken clutch cable which caused crash at the starting line in Częstochowa.
