Individual European Championship was organized for the first time by European Motorcycle Union in 2001. At first British federation didn’t take part in the rivalry. In the first year there were also no Scandinavians. Championship consisted of the final tournament which was preceded by the system of national and international qualifications. In the years 2001 – 2012 world class riders, who started in Grand Prix, didn’t take part in it. In 2013 the event got the prestige on which it deserves.
Individual European Championship got the new quality. Instead of one day final, the best riders of Europe fight for the title, medals and financial prizes in the series of four final tournaments. What is more everything can be followed live on Eurosport.
One Sport – the organizer of Speedway European Championships – has invited the best speedway riders, such as Tomasz Gollob, Nicki Pedersen, Emil Sajfutdinow or Andreas Jonsson to the rivalry. Each final tournament will consist of 22 heats. After regular phase of the event, in which riders start against each other, two best ones will qualify to the great final. The one who will have the most points after four rounds will win the Individual European Champion title.
2014 season is the fourteenth in which riders fight for the medals in Europe. At this moment the most gold medals has Slovene, Matej Zagar who can’t be seen this season in SEC. Zagar won two gold medals in one day finals. However as far as the general number of medals is concerned the best is European Champion 2012, Ales Dryml. Czech was on the podium five times but last year he didn’t cope with the rivals and was far in the general classification.
As far as the countries are concerned the most medals have Poles – 13. The second are Czechs – six and third Danes, five. The amount of medals of this last country can be improved after the last tournament on the 19th of September in Częstochowa. Big chance for the podium in general classification have Peter Kildemand and Nicki Pedersen. If current leader of SEC, Emil Sajfutdinow wins the gold medal, he will provide his national team fourth medal but third gold one!
Fans who will show up on the 19th of September at SGP Arena will definitely be witnesses of the history. Fifteen riders will fight for each point as if future is depended on it. Let’s remind also that the best five riders of this year’s series will qualify to the next year one. It is really worth to fight.
See you in Częstochowa!
