One of his best best results is victory in European U-19 Championships in 2007. Nicolai started his career on minitracks. He got his license for the starts on traditional variant in 2004. His most important accomplishment is Danish Individual Championship, won in 2006. Furthermore, one year earlier, he took bronze medal in Danish Team Championships and another bronze with U-21 national team in World Championships. When Nicolai was 21, he took 6th place in World U-21 Championships with 10 points.
Promotion to SEC 2017 was won by the Dane in Challenge; he was third. In eliminations in Lamothe – Landerron, he finished 4th. Due to the injury after SEC's second round in Güstrow, Nicolai withdrew from the cycle and finished the season.
