When the curtain came down on a very successful season for the Speedway European Championship, the focus turned to the line up for 2014. Already the top 3 were automatically qualified for the following season, Martin Vaculik (Slovakia), Nicki Pedersen (Denmark), and Grigorij Laguta (Russia).
SEC are very pleased to announce that Emil Sayfutdinov (Russia) and Andreas Jonsson (Sweden) have both received, and accepted, permanent wildcards for 2014. Both riders will be keen to make up for lost ground after injury hampered much of their 2013 season, with Sayfutdinov in particular, having to withdraw with injuries, whilst leading the European Championship:
Andreas Jonsson had his fair share of troubles in 2013. Originally a permanent wildcard for SEC, he had to give up his spot to fellow countryman Fredrik Lindgren after a big early season crash resulted in a fractured shoulder blade, so Andreas is keen to get stuck into the SEC himself for the first time:
Yes the injury came at the worst possible time in the season, and I was out for about 6 weeks. It’s tough to come back from that. Everyone has had that 6 weeks more of testing and training, and although I was scoring ok in league racing, it was very tough in the GP’s. It is fair to say I am happy the season is finished now, and I am looking forward to having a rest.
SEC now has a season under its belt, what are your views on the competition based on what you have seen so far?
I think it’s a great product. The fact that it is live on Eurosport makes it really easy for everyone to watch the meetings, not just in Europe, and that can only be good for the sport.
It’s a great show to watch. It’s something new for speedway, and the thing that strikes me is the atmosphere, the riders are having fun, they look relaxed, but the racing is still tough. I look forward to being a part of it.
That takes the line up to 5 riders:
1. Martin Vaculik (Slovakia)
2. Nicki Pedersen (Denmark)
3. Grigorij Laguta (Russia)
4. Emil Sayfutdinov (Russia)
5. Andreas Jonsson (Sweden)
Two additional wildcards will be unveiled very soon.
