Leon Madsen won the opening round of the Speedway Euro Championship 2021 in Bydgoszcz. Despite a dangerous fall in the final race the Dane claimed his seventh win in the SEC series.
It wasn't an easy competition for Leon Madsen. The 2018 Individual European Champion struggled with his bikes that did not allow him to develop his full speed. In Bydgoszcz, the Dane won two races. He reached for the most important "three" in the final heat of the day, when he reached the finish line on the first place in the re-run.
- The first meeting is done. It was a tough one. I was struggling a little bit with my bikes, engines exactly. They were not running as I want them to, so I really had to fight hard on the track and make some smart moves. I feel I did them as I should.
In the first run of the final race, Madsen had to chase his rivals. The four had a great duel which ended with Mikkel Michelsen colliding with Leon Madsen. The Grand Prix participant fell on the track and Michelsen was excluded from the re-run. The older of the Danes did not get up from the track for quite a long time. The reason was an injury from the crash.
- My knee got hit very hard. We got up to the re-run and I won it so I'm very happy about that.
Madsen said he needed a few days off after the crash.
- Now I probably need to take a few days off, got some ice on my knee, get the leg up, relax and come back stronger again.
